There are numerous benefits to a balanced and healthy diet, including less stress, a trimmer waist line, less illness, more energy, and a better complexion. But how do you go about eating a better diet? Exactly what things should you implement in order to achieve optimal health through the foods that you consume? Without further ado, here are the tenets of the healthiest diets.
1. Eat from all the major nutrition food groups
First, eating from all the major food groups does not mean eating just as many grains as you do fruits and veggies. Fruits and veggies are the two biggest pillars of a healthy diet. But in addition to these nutrient-packed foods, you will also want to consume complex carbohydrates by way of whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats.
2. Omit simple carbs and sugars as much as possible
Simple carbs and sugars are the foods that we put in the junk food category. Most of these foods are packaged and processed. Some examples include chips, soda pop, candies, cakes, donuts and fried foods. To aim for clean eating, try to limit these as much as possible and eat more of the foods from step 1.
3. Drink plenty of water
Water is vital to the body for many processes. It helps to promote better circulation, an improved immune system and more energy. Water can come in different forms. For example, you can count some juice and milk as water. But you cannot count alcohol or those beverages that contain caffeine.
4. Eat when you're hungry
Make sure that you are eating when you're hungry and not constantly snacking. You need to be able to tell when your body wants food. But with that being said, don't wait too long to eat either because this can mess with your blood sugar levels.
5. Don't eat emotionally
Some people sadly fall into the trap of eating emotionally. This includes eating when you are nervous, sad or angry. Try to keep food out of it when you aren't feeling your best. This will improve your overall health and wellbeing in addition to just your physical health.
6. Try not to consume too many calories
Lastly, you don't need to count your calories every day, but if you are trying to lose weight, limit your calories by a few hundred each day. And when you are maintaining, try not to consume too many at once either.
